magnolia | primary bath
01. THE CONCEPT
This project started with a feeling: the desire to be elsewhere, some place reminiscent of earlier times and far-off places. A primary bath that calms and grounds the user with a few stolen minutes of peace. Stone and rough edges, worn and well-loved vintage pieces, and brass accents with a heavy patina were key to the integrity of this design.
02. the space
An old home, three stories, one shower. To create a fully finished primary suite, we planned to relocate the existing walk-in closet to the other side of the room and use that space to build-out a full bathroom. While following the constraints of the existing shell and roofline, we were able to give them everything on their wish list and more: a double vanity, plenty of storage, a larger window with more light, and a beautiful shower with a built-in bench.
03. the materials
Staying true to the architecture, we created this space to embrace the ornate details befit for the old home. Soft and earthy materials, like the tumbled edge limestone pavers on the floor, handmade zellige tiles for the shower, and white oak wood for the vanity, create an atmosphere of light and calm. And as lovers of even the smallest details, we made sure to create little moments everywhere you look: the slight ogee profile of the marble countertops, the worn marks on the brass mirror, the way the green of the tile is almost an exact shade match of the trees reflected out the open window. Vintage elements like the reclaimed stool and Turkish rug add a layer of warmth and history to the room that balance the newness.
